We Have Left Social Media

You will not find World Travel Family, me, Alyson, or my husband on social media today. We quit the socials in 2025, months ago. Please feel free to unsubscribe from all of our social media profiles. And if you’re thinking of quitting them yourself, – do it. Go on. If I can, you can. It’s something you can do to reclaim your humanity and break ties with the machine. More than one friend has said that they’re only still on Facebook because of me. I live a long way away. So we quit en masse and now make calls. It’s much nicer.

Stick around for emails, please. We humans need to stick together more than ever. Why did we do it? How did it affect our traffic and income as travel bloggers?

I’ve deleted all of my Facebook groups, pages and personal profile. It feels great! Insta is gone. I was briefly on Substack, where people seemingly compete to be the most polite. And then one person wasn’t. And that’s when I left. It’s OK, I forgive her and wish her well. She was using hate and drama to get clicks, for what purpose? Self publicity? I have no clue, but I’m done with it.

I do not want to feed the machine, and I do not consent to all of the darkness that’s around humanity. I haven’t watched the news or TV in years, almost 20 years. I don’t want to be told that I should live in fear or suffering. I have never wanted to be an influencer. It’s so fake. I am not a fake, I am authentically me, warts ‘n all.

Social Media has been important for travel bloggers and all bloggers for a very long time, or so we were told. It was a great way to collect followers, grow traffic and get “brand deals”. I’ve never wanted to do brand deals. I don’t want to do any of it any more, so I quit.

My private group “Living Differently” has gone, as have all my FB business pages. The page for this site had over 10K followers, so did my Insta, but honestly, that means nothing.

Facebook has barely driven traffic for years, mostly because I can’t be bothered and don’t want to spend hours creating content. Also, because it became a toxic environment filled with hate bots and people who don’t yet live in unconditional love.

Chef, my husband, has deleted Facebook. The kids never got sucked into that world, thankfully. Most kids don’t use Facebook.

I’ve deleted all of our content on YouTube and multiple Facebook groups and pages. I haven’t opened Twitter in years. The only one that remains is Pinterest. Pinterest seems fairly innocuous, and I like making pretty pictures, sometimes.

I have never been on TikTok.

When I first started blogging, Facebook was the only platform that existed; one by one, the many social media platforms became essential for my industry. Allegedly.

We became slaves to them, generating more and more complex content to win the algorithm wars.

And then they were all owned by the same people. People with too much money.

I never fully committed. I was a token player, my superpower was always this website.

Being on them is an important part of SEO, so we’re told. Well, if that’s the case, I’m not playing that game any more. Email only.

I still consume YouTube content and occasionally like or comment to help the creators gain reach. The creators I watch are human, not AI, and they have important information to share. Uplifting or helpful information. I try to stay away from the darkness while remaining informed and unaffected by things going on.

Did Quitting Social Media Affect Our Income or Traffic?

No, it has had no effect. March just gone (2026) was a record month, but then governments created a war, and all travel will likely grind to a halt. I don’t care. I’ve never cared much about money, just about being with my family and keeping them well, safe, and happy. My need for material “stuff” is very low.

My lack of need for income may come across as privileged, but it’s really not. I just have faith that everything will be fine. The things I do at home are of far more value to my family than the monetary value of a salary.

I grow food, cook, clean, renovate and nurture. I try to educate, too.

Financial collapse is coming. Dissolution of society as we know it is coming. I don’t know what the transition will look like, but the solution to turbulence is love. There’s a love-shaped void on social media.

I did have a mission to show people, because some didn’t know, that the world is a wonderful place, filled with kind, good people. I wanted to show people that stepping out of the system was a positive thing to do. And that it was possible.

I don’t have many self-limiting beliefs, I never have had them in terms of taking on big unconventional things. It started with homebirth, then homeschool, then a step out of “normal” society. I didn’t realise that I was ahead of the pack when I chose those things. I didn’t think I was anything special, but I did know that I loved peoples, places, faiths and cultures, and I wanted readers not to see any place or people as lesser or to be feared.

We’re going back to how we were meant to be as we become more and more off-grid. I like it. It gives me more time to enjoy my life, and I do, very much.

The email newsletters still go out every week. A few people read, but nobody comments most weeks. I’ve lost that connection with the readers that I used to have. It was valuable to me, I miss it. But too many people have gone from trusting other humans, to putting their faith in AI. It’s very dark. I hope they wake up.

So stay on the email list, there will be more travel content because I still love learning about, and sharing places, with our readers. And I still love doing things differently.

You can always email me.

Take care out there.

  1. I only just found your blog recently and read your emails a few times because I am so spammed with emails that I had forgotten when I found you. I am so glad I opened this email today to see this post. Social media is hard these days and as a fellow “lover”, it’s a life sucker. Where is the love? I run a social media page advocating for women who have suffered from domestic violence and childhood trauma. I had seen so much support and love on my page and now it seems to be mostly people looking for artificial content. I see what you see. We are divided as a species and we can sense the fall coming soon. It’s been so nice finding people like you who chose a different life and who are brave enough to make decisions that go against that ridiculous societal grain. I look forward to seeing more of your posts!

    • Thank you for such a fantastic and genuine comment. You know we just had a neighbour pop over as we were working outside and we basically had the same conversation. The world is waking up, or has already. Exciting times ahead! I don’t post much any more because we’re so busy with other things, but every now and then inspiration strikes. Thanks for being there. I need to connect with more like minded people. I didn’t realise, over 20 years ago when I refused a hospital birth and the school system, that I was an early adopter. I hear it everywhere now, that the only option left is to homeschool. Sending love xx

  2. Hi Alyson
Thank you for your valuable contribution through your writings of world travel with your family over the years. It is always so informative and refreshing to follow your adventures and experiences and also those of your son (Bali – manta ray story) I really appreciate the stories you have shared and apologise for not commenting. My kids have grown up and we don’t get family holidays often now but i still feel inspired to travel in the future. I would like to go to Vietnam. We nearly got there in 2025 on the return home from Europe however i foolishly forgot to get a visa so we couldn’t board the plane and needed to get alternate air travel home. I will still look out for your emails. Stay well and travel safe

You know I did the same thing. Booked flights for Vietnam for the next day, from Australia, and didn’t even think about visas. Luckily, with UK passports, you don’t need one, so God was smiling on me that day. I hope you make it and it’s so nice to get comments. My husband was assaulted by a neighbour this mmorning. A very dark, angry, hate filled couple that I just can’t understand. I’m all about spreading love and light and just don’t get why some people aren’t like that. Mankind is one. We should all be helping, supporting and honouring each other. And you just did that, thanks. Have a great day.
