Hi guys, greetings from London where we're sweltering in the final throws of summer. We made the mistake of taking the tube into China Town on the hottest day of the year for a family lunch today. It was a great lunch, it's a family tradition of ours to do lunch on Chef's day off, but we were hotter than the noodles. It was Chef's only day off for a while so we had to make the … [Read more...]
What is a Digital Nomad?
A digital nomad is somebody who is nomadic - ie. they travel. They are location independent in that they are not tied to one place by work, school, posessions, pets, car loans, friends or family. The digital part refers to their income , they control their business and their income online. They can work from anywhere in the world from their laptops. Some work crazy hours, some just a few hours a week. We have a collection of posts below on what it's like to live and work as a digital nomad.
I'm famous for saying that AirBnb is useless for families and we never use it. If you're not on Facebook you may not know that, so I'm putting it out there via the blog today because I've (possibly) changed my mind. After 3+ years of full-time travel I'm sitting in a glorious light-filled apartment, footsteps from my beloved Thames, paying a very modest price and, yes, it … [Read more...]
I get ideas for posts in all kinds of ways, sometimes I want to tell a story about some cool place we've been, sometimes I want to help or inspire, sometimes ideas just pop into my head and sometimes, like today, I get ideas from other people's words.Earlier this week I read a post about how this thing travel has changed somebody. It was a great post, but I didn't agree … [Read more...]
My husband (Chef) was on the phone to his sister. She asked where we were, what we were up to, where we were going next, "Well right now I'm eating breakfast in a hostel in Kuala Lumpur, but tomorrow? No idea"Yesterday our great-grand-nanna asked where we'd be next week. I said I didn't know."And Alyson, are you OK with that?""Totally."Does that feeling of … [Read more...]
4 amazing years of seeing the world, somewhere between 35 and 50+ countries each, an amazing education for the kids and a new career for me. More family time, more fun, less work. But to some it must look crazy. How can we prefer backpacks to bedrooms, co-working spaces to steady jobs and challenging destinations to comfort? I know that most of you won't want to do it our way, … [Read more...]
This is an old post. It was written when I finally woke up to what we'd achieved, it was the moment everything changed for us and our website's following and monthly views started going through the roof. It was when I first came up with the concept of " Living Differently" and was meant to inspire and help others do likewise. Back then, 2016, I wrote:How many years have I … [Read more...]
Shhhh! They're all asleep. Wiped out like a small pride of lions after a big day on the savannah. All 4 of us in this little apartment, 2 big beds, happy as can be. Chef has his first day off today, he can sleep in. Boo lost a tooth yesterday, he'll wake to find 2 pounds under his pillow. D read 'till past midnight, lost in , all is right with the world as London sunshine … [Read more...]
This morning at sunrise I sat down to my computer to start my work for the day. It's what I do every morning before the kids wake up. The first thing I do is check my emails, messages, stats and comments. Some good news, some bad, a couple of lovely comments and readers asking for help, then BAM! this delight hit me like a baseball bat to the head."We took our boys to Kandy … [Read more...]
Travel doesn't have to be expensive. We all know the old mantra, travel is cheaper than staying at home, and it's absolutely true, but who doesn't want to minimise travel expenses to get maximum mileage from their dollar? We've been doing just that for years, supporting our travels on very little cash, These days there are many ways to travel the world for free, or at … [Read more...]
