Shhhh! They're all asleep. Wiped out like a small pride of lions after a big day on the savannah. All 4 of us in this little apartment, 2 big beds, happy as can be. Chef has his first day off today, he can sleep in. Boo lost a tooth yesterday, he'll wake to find 2 pounds under his pillow. D read 'till past midnight, lost in a world of Greek myths, all is right with the world … [Read more...]
What is a Digital Nomad?
A digital nomad is somebody who is nomadic - ie. they travel. They are location independent in that they are not tied to one place by work, school, posessions, pets, car loans, friends or family. The digital part refers to their income , they control their business and their income online. They can work from anywhere in the world from their laptops. Some work crazy hours, some just a few hours a week. We have a collection of posts below on what it's like to live and work as a digital nomad.
This morning at sunrise I sat down to my computer to start my work for the day. It's what I do every morning before the kids wake up. The first thing I do is check my emails, messages, stats and comments. Some good news, some bad, a couple of lovely comments and readers asking for help, then BAM! this delight hit me like a baseball bat to the head. "We took our boys to Kandy … [Read more...]
Travel doesn't have to be expensive. We all know the old mantra, travel is cheaper than staying at home, and it's absolutely true, but who doesn't want to minimise travel expenses to get maximum mileage from their dollar? We've been doing just that for years, supporting our travels on very little cash. These days there are many ways to travel the world for free, or at … [Read more...]
Things gradually changed here at World Travel Family, our blogs started to follow a new course and we're starting to truly be that thing, a location independent family. I thought I'd share with you what happened, how we made them earn for us and support our lifestyle. Maybe you'll take inspiration from our experiences, maybe you can pick up a few tips, maybe you can help us … [Read more...]
One day we were enjoying India in beautiful Kovalam, planning our next-day flight to Kathmandu and subsequent overland return to North India, the next we were landing in Heathrow, tired, displaced, confused, sick and thoroughly disorientated. It was a very weird experience, India one day, London the next. We hadn't had enough, a month in India can never be enough. We were … [Read more...]
Hello ! We're in India, this is our first post, on our second day. I'm going back to travel-journal style blogging because, to be honest, running a website for money takes far too much time. So no frills, no fussing, no spellcheck, no SEO, but the adverts have to stay. My blog is replacing my travel journal, a thing I always used to keep in the days before internet. I adore … [Read more...]
Around the globe 250 million individuals use Pinterest every month (source). My account was in the top 20,000 accounts according to Board Booster before that tool was banned. I was pretty pleased with that. Today I'm totally re-writing this post, it's years old. I wrote it back when I was getting almost 1,000 clicks to my website every day from Pinterest. I don't get that now, … [Read more...]
Yesterday, a potential hotel sponsor asked me "Can your readers afford us?" That's a perfectly reasonable question, we've written post after post about doing things on the cheap, saving money to travel and finding great deals. I can see where she was coming from. I replied, explained our demographic and our philosophy and I'm thrilled to report, we got the deal with a … [Read more...]
Hi there, before you start reading I'll say up front that I wrote this post almost 6 years ago. In those 6 years I've learnt a LOT more and we now make a very good living from our websites. My husband no longer works, this blog supports our family of 4 as we travel the world. Today we have 300,000 page views per month. Everything in this post is valid still and will stand … [Read more...]
We've been "Living the Dream" for 2 years now. We've been travelling full-time, seeing the world and spending most of our time together as a family while hardly working, other than on the blogs. Before we set off on this journey we weren't rich, we were a very normal family struggling to make ends meet and actually classified as "low income" through my choice to quit work and … [Read more...]
When we left home to travel in 2013 we hoped we could travel indefinitely, or for several years, on our savings and a few small income sources. We travelled ultra-cheap back then, these days we don't, but we made budget travel our mission as we stretched our cash. Our newish travel blog was doing OK and we had a dream, would, could, travel blogging fund long term travel? 1 … [Read more...]
We've been travelling full-time for over 4 years now, without a full-time traditional job between us and loving our new non-conventional life. Raising the money to travel was hard work initially, we weren't rich, didn't win the lottery and for the preceding 5 years we only had 1 income, my husband's chef's salary. I was a busy stay-at-home mum with babies and kids in those … [Read more...]
