My first attempt at being vegan while travelling failed miserably in the face of London and a surprising lack of options, but I'm back on track and going for vegan again. We have a few months of home cooking ahead of us to ease us into veganism, then back on the road. Will I even manage it? I don't know. The rest of my family like meat and still want to eat it so it's tricky, … [Read more...]

Where to eat in London for those of us who love good food and want to keep an eye on our spending? London is one city that could destroy your trip budget in food costs, if you're not smart about where you spend. Eating out 3 times a day here, as we would in Asia, just ain't gonna happen. Accommodation in London will likely cost you an arm and a leg. On the global scale, … [Read more...]
One of the many wonderful things about travelling the world is discovering new dishes and cooking methods. The ultimate way to get to know a country's culinary specialities is to take a cooking class, you will find these in almost every city or town you visit and they're well worth spending a few dollars and a day or so of your time to take. In Battambang we took a half day … [Read more...]
I posted today about our cookery course in Battambang, Cambodia. It was a fabulous experience. As part of the tour we visited the local market, something we do often, but on this occasion we stayed longer than usual and took more photos. I'm publishing these photos separately because sensitive viewers may find them a little unpleasant. Here is a quick tour of Battambang … [Read more...]
We've been in Istanbul for 5 nights and we're having a fantastic time. This morning I was so overcome by the fabulousness of the food that I felt the urge to write a post sharing the joy of eating in Istanbul. If you're hungry, you'd better go read something else, some delicious pictures coming. We've stayed in two quite different hotels so far, the wonderful Hotel Alilass … [Read more...]
We love British food at World Travel Family. We love most food, to be honest. We have a passion for Thai and a fixation with Indian, my husband loves food so much he's made a career out of it. He's a chef, busy now in a 5-star kitchen on Park Lane. Right now we're in London on a mission to track down real London food. We found London traditional dishes such as pie, mash and … [Read more...]
It seems so long ago now! On our first night in Lancaster county PA, in some nondescript but friendly motel, we were just settling down for the night when we hear a bellow from the next room: "Get yourself in that tub or I'll be opening a can of Whoop-Ass on y'all!" We didn't think people really said that. But they do and now so do I, with full Southern accent. The … [Read more...]
Since we've been back in the UK we've been revelling in the British food scene, privately and professionally. For those who don't know, my husband is a Chef and is loving working in London's top hotels again. Great food is easy to find in restaurants and in the shops, local markets being a particularly good place to find quality produce and lovingly-made local products. On … [Read more...]
Discovering Umbrian food was a massive highlight of our week in Umbria with Our Whole Village. Everybody knows Italian food is like, but food in Umbria has its own specialities and local flavours. We dined incredibly well during our week and have the expanded waistlines to show for it. So a look at the food, recipes, classic dishes and regional specialities of Umbria in central … [Read more...]
I'm never going to be able to eat dried pasta again after our time in Italy. Fresh, home-made pasta, produced with love from the finest ingredients is a totally wonderful eating experience. The pasta is softer, slightly spongy, and soaks up the flavours of the sauce. It's delicious and very more-ish. A kids cooking class in Italy gave my boys a chance to make pasta, from … [Read more...]
As we were tucking into a sensational plate of spaghetti with fresh black truffles the other night, it was mentioned that maybe, just possibly, we could go truffle hunting while we were in Italy. A lady knew a lady who had a truffle dog and she maybe, just possibly, would take us on a truffle hunting expedition. Umbria is famous for truffles, we've enjoyed all sorts of truffle … [Read more...]
We've just completed one year of non-stop family travel. We made it from Australia, to Asia, to Europe, to Central and North America and back to Europe. We are very into food, my husband is an exec chef, I'm just a big food freak. We've tried some amazing new dishes, bur what were our food highlights from one year of travel? In no particular order, here are a few of our … [Read more...]
